Formerly housed in two concrete cylinders with tiny porthole windows, Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s primary cafeteria was a dim, depressing space with a matching menu of unhealthy choices. KMDG was part of the project team that completely re-envisioned the hospital’s primary dining experience with a new glass pavilion cantilevered out from the 1970’s Bertram Goldberg concrete tower.

As landscape designer, Michael developed the design concept and prepared the drawing set through 100% construction documents. Due to the highly technical assembly, extensive coordination with the architects and structural engineers was required in order to provide sufficient planting depth, drainage, irrigation, and landscape lighting for the garden. Highly visible, the detailed planting design includes a diverse collection of compact and miniature plants to provide interest throughout the seasons.
