LND LAB (re)directs maintenance & operations to socially activate and ecologically regenerate fallow landscapes. The practice uses field work and temporary installations to adaptively manage sites over time, incorporating research infrastructure to aid in the documentation and interpretation of landscape change. This expertise draws from design research on experimental landscapes and first-hand material exploration through horticulture, restoration ecology, and landscape construction.
The design consultancy is founded by Michael Geffel, registered landscape architect, educator, and master gardener. Prior to creating LND LAB, Michael was Professor of Practice at the University of Oregon College of Design where he founded the Fuller Initiative Land Lab: an award-winning and internationally recognized model of design research, education, and service. He has practiced professionally in the Pacific Northwest, New England, the Mid-Atlantic, and SE Asia, with experience working on public urban landscapes, landscapes on structure, green infrastructure, and regional planning. His scholarship has been published in Landscape Journal, Kerb, LA+, and Scenario Journal and his field experiments have been featured in Landscape Architecture Magazine, Places Journal, and the Oregonian.
